ABOUT TREBLE VOICES FOR PEACE

Mission/Vision Statement

Treble Voices For Peace (TVFP) is an all-ages, community chorus dedicated to building a shared vision of inclusion, community, and justice. TVFP performs diverse repertoire with a special focus on music written by and for women and gender minorities, who sing in the treble range: Soprano, Alto and Contralto. We strive to create a welcoming and safe space for women and gender minorities from all backgrounds and levels of musical knowledge. We believe in the transformational power of song to create inspiration, heal trauma, bridge divides and bring attention to issues which effect the gender-marginalized community.

Our motto is "Quality Through Inclusion". There are no auditions to become a member. Singing both simple and complex pieces, we work diligently to meet a high-performance standard, connected to our open and affirming membership. We spend time building our relationships and balance the joy of play and adventure with hard work, creating something bigger than ourselves.

TVFP endeavors to open minds and hearts through our music, performance, and presence in our communities, and look to partner with other community groups, such as churches, temples,
nursing homes, women's shelters, libraries, schools, and other arts organizations.

*TVFP is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine and takes no position on outside issues.

HISTORY

Our parent organization, The Olympia Peace Choir began in 2010 when Kerri Lynn Nichols, who had envisioned an inclusive community choir, shared her idea with a few close friends.

Founding Artistic Director Kerri Lynn Nichols, Becky Liebman and Debbie Koshelnik were among the first to help found the choir and get it up on its feet.

Kerri Lynn asked a dear friend and local attorney, John Parr, if he would help with the legal paperwork so that The Olympia Peace Choir could become a nonprofit organization. John Feek and Scott LaViollette also completed the arduous task of making sure the choir had a firm foundation as an organization. The first board of directors included Scott LaViollette, Tamara Crane, Sophia Rychener, John Feek, and Becky Liebman.

A first orientation/rehearsal for the choir was held in a legal building donated by John Parr. We were hoping for 20 people to show up and sing. Instead, there were 40! We then moved the choir’s rehearsal space to First United Church of Olympia and rehearsed there for several years. Currently, we meet at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Monday nights from September through late May.

In the past few years, TOPC has performed to standing-room-only audiences at the Capitol Rotunda, Arts Walk, the Olympia Farmers Market, and more. We’re grateful for the Olympia community’s love and support for our mission.

As our program has grown, to expand our reach and make sure there is a place for everyone to sing, Treble Voices For Peace has now come to fruition in 2023. Grants and individual donations have given us an initial financial footing to create a choir with a specific identity, serving women and gender minorities, young adults and marginalized groups. While both choirs are open and affirming, TVFP is specifically for those singing in the treble range: soprano, alto, contralto.
